Love! Wish the portion size was a bit bigger for their chow fun beef stir fry bc it's just that good!
The food is SO good! It's so popular, be patient and wait for your place in line. The customers know the drill and it's an honor system. The food comes out hot, fresh and delicious. Enjoy!
Great food! I recommend the soup dumplings, spicy chaoshou, and the cucumbers (excellent palette cleanser). Restaurant was clean and service was very attentive. My water was never empty! Also was cool to learn the restaurant was named after, who I assume, was the owner who was also our server. Very affordable for the amount of food given. Great place to check out, especially in the colder months when you're craving comfort food. Will definitely be back!!!
I visited this Chinese restaurant with a group of friends. We were all out of town so we didn't know what to expect. The surrounding area was definitely isolated and not in a popular area, so it gave off hole-in-the-wall vibes. The menu had several offerings of dumplings and various other Chinese dishes, and it's nice that they had pictures. We ordered the Sweet & Sour ribs, Cucumber with Garlic, soup dumplings, and spicy dumplings. The spicy dumplings were definitely the best, great flavor without being overly spicy. The other dishes were quite tasty as well, and everyone in our group was pretty satisfied with our lunch. The service was pretty quick. It only took a few minutes after ordering for the food to come out. The seating area was a plain bench and table area, so don't expect a fancy restaurant. If you're looking for a more casual (and tasty!) dining experience, definitely stop by here.
Honestly, if someone's got something to say about the service, the food is going to be GOOD, and that is a fact especially for Asian-owned businesses. I'm from California where my hometown is the Mecca of Chinese food, and for the months I've been in Cleveland, homey, authentic Chinese food is all I crave. I grew up on Shanghainese food and when I found out about LJ Shanghai from social media, I raced there. We got the Spicy Chaoshao (wontons), Chongqing Spicy Noodle Soup, Sweet & Sour Ribs, and Pig Ear in Chili Sauce. Everything was excellent, plus I heard they make most items in-house, including their chili oil. Really good comfort food that's flavorfully authentic. You already know about the noodles and dumplings- but if you're eyeing the pig ear on the menu and you're skeptical, try it out! The texture is a bit gelatinous and crunchy from the cartilage. It's one of my fiancé's favorite cold dishes. It's dunked in the same sauce as the Spicy Wontons. So it gets coated and flavorful. I hope to come back and order a couple baskets of Soup Dumplings!
Came back to visit . This recommend this place. There staff very friendly it's like going to family dinner.
Really, Eileen? Ratings are about the food. It's fine to complain about service, but you downgraded everything. SAD..... I had another great dinner brought to our table along with great service. If I were a spoiled brat I wouldn't vent on one issue. SO SORRY FOR YOUR MISERY...NOT!
The food here is what makes this place!! It's authentic and delicious. The vibe is definitely hole in the wall. It's not super cute so you're not coming here for the aesthetic, but for the food. Service is usually pretty quick and staff is friendly.
If I'm looking for a restaurant to bring my Shanghainese parents to, this is it. Bare bones dining rooms, vinegar on every table, and the best homemade XLB that Cleveland has to offer. The cherry on top is the boisterous owner, who greets diners loudly in English and Chinese while flying across the restaurant taking orders. LJ Shanghai is comfort food for when you need a good takeout bowl of soup noodles to eat alone in front of the TV or dumplings for the whole gang (although the whole gang must be present to be seated). On weekend evenings it can get quite busy, but if you come in a group of 2-4 you're usually able to get a seat on the fly. The menu is a small front and back laminated page and has evolved a bit over the years, with the core theme of Shanghainese cuisine with a little Chongqing spicy flair. Prices have risen over time as well, but are still quite affordable and you're almost certain to leave feeling full. First timers will not be disappointed by the soup dumplings, spicy beef noodle soup, or pork and shrimp wontons. If you're feeling even more Shanghai, go for the fried rice cake or fried bean curd. Honestly though, any variation of noodles here has restorative powers, particularly on a cold, gray Cleveland day. Service is pretty quick, and to pass the time you can peek in on the dumplings being made in house in the kitchen next to the cash register. Restrooms are located in the back up the ramp, and though one is marked for male and the other female, they're identical in their contents so I'll often use whichever opens first in a pinch. I'll see you here soon!
